Kwanzaa 2020 – Day 6

Habari Gani? Kuumba!

When I call myself an Artist, I use the word because there is no other word (that I know) to describe what I do.

At my core, I create beauty. That may sound arrogant, but it is also the shorter answer. Everything that I enjoy doing comes back to that core. I have drawn comics, written poetry and short stories, taught Liturgical Dance and Mime, became a licensed cosmetologist, and I currently make OOAK dolls.

It all comes back to creating beauty.

When you are born and raised in ugliness, beauty becomes something to aspire to. In my case, it is a mission. Many times in my life, I have made something beautiful out of nothing. How do I apply that to my community?

I have tried to apply my gifts to the betterment of the people around me. Those gifts have not always been appreciated, yet I still try.

This is why I put so much energy into my own world: because the one “out there” still has no place for me. I’m too old to play “please-let-me-in”. If I cannot have a seat at someone else’s table, then I will make my own….and sit at the head.

Stay safe out there.
